We are, and have been, the largest company specializing in window air conditioners for over 40 years.
Window air conditioners are the most common type of air conditioner for apartments in our fine city. These units must be installed in a window (as oppose to an opening in the wall). Window air conditioners have vents on the side that need to be completely free of any obstructions.
We sell the Carrier, and Climette lines of window air conditioning. These brand names have designed room air conditioners that are quieter, more efficient, gentler on the environment and easily installed with simpler controls that ensure easy operation. The room air conditioners range in cooling capacity from 5,000 BTU anywhere up to 32,000 BTU, depending on the square footage of the area you wish to cool.

If you are interested in purchasing a room air conditioner, remember these helpful hints:
  • Measure the height and width of the opening you wish to place the air conditioner in.
  • Determine the approximate square footage of the area you wish to cool.
  • Remember that room air conditioners will only cool the rooms or open areas that they are in. Do not expect the air to travel around corners and travel down hallways.

Sizing the room air conditioner that’s right for your

Let’s assume that the room you want to air condition measures
15’ X 20’, that it faces south and has an insinuated roof above it:
  • First determine the room’s square footage, and look for the appropriate column in the square foot portion of the chare (top row). Because your room is 300 sq. ft. you would look for the column headed 300.
  • Next, you would look under the “Exposure” heading and, because your room faces South select the block called “East or South”
  • Within that block, (because the room in the example has an uninsulated room above it) you would select the “Uninsulated Roof” designation and follow that line across to the 300 column.
  • There, where the two intersect on the sixth line down is the best capacity for your room 9,500 BTU.

The BTU’s are calculated for normal sun exposure, two normal size windows per room, and two people occupying the room air conditioned area.

  • For best cooling, a slightly undersized unit (no more than 10 percent under) will result in greater dehumidifying efficiency, as that unit will operate continuously, whereas a larger unit will run intermittently.
  • If the air conditioning unit is to be used for nighttime cooling only, an air conditioner with up to 30 percent less capacity may be used.
  • Add 4,000 BTU/hr if area to be cooled includes a kitchen.
  • If area to be cooled is over 1400 sq. ft., it is recommended that more than one unit be used.
